Photographic Live Action Capture for Immersive Media

In the realm of immersive content authoring, computer-generated imaging has benefited from decades of development, and significant advancements in both software algorithms and the hardware needed to support them.  But the use photographic live-action capture techniques for entertainment and informative programming continues to be a high priority for content creators. Recent technology advances are opening new opportunities in this area, but so far, there has been no clear consensus on preferred capture methods or encoding formats.

This white paper was prepared by the IDEA Live Action Working Group, and explores the various data formats and capture methodologies currently in use or proposed for live action capture, then assesses potential benefits and shortcomings of each. The eventual goal of this IDEA Working Group is to make specific recommendations and evaluations vis-à-vis considerations like device independence, storage, delivery, interoperability with other formats and eventually standardization.
